About Mik Sølvborg
From naval officer to cloud architect
Military Career (2009–2018)
I spent nine years as an officer in the Royal Danish Navy before moving into tech. The experience shaped how I approach complex problems today — with discipline, clear communication, and a bias for action.
Key Roles
- Head of Education — Navy's Center for Diving (led 17 staff, 2016–2018)
- Project Manager — Ministry of Defence Material & Procurement Agency (2015–2016)
- Deputy Commander & Watch Team Leader — various naval positions (2009–2015)
What It Taught Me
- Team coordination under pressure
- Strategic planning & execution
- Structured communication
- Rapid decision-making
Education
Formal
- Tactical Officer — Royal Danish Navy Officer School (Professional Bachelor in Leadership & Strategy, 2004–2009)
Leadership Courses
- Authentic Leadership — Royal Danish Defence College (2015)
- Appreciative Leadership — Royal Danish Defence College (2014)
Defence & Cloud Transition (2018–2020)
After the Navy I spent two years as a BI consultant at the Ministry of Defence — translating business requirements into technical BI solutions, developing a group-wide BI training programme for 600+ participants, and co-developing the BI strategy. This role bridged my military career and cloud architecture work.
Cloud Migration Experience
Before focusing on data platforms, I delivered cloud migration projects — including compute-environment migrations with CloudFormation, EC2 Auto Scaling Groups, and Linux Bash scripting for server automation (2020–2021).
Outside of Work
I recharge through physical training and creative pursuits that keep me sharp and balanced.
Fitness
I train and lift weights four times a week. The discipline and consistency translate directly into how I approach technical work — show up, do the reps, progress over time.
Music
I play the guitar and do music production in my free time. Working with sound design and arrangement is a creative outlet that exercises a completely different part of the brain.
